The Mayor & Council adopted a resolution at the February 25, 2009 Borough Council meeting authorizing the Borough’s participation in the recently announced Sustainable Jersey Certification process. Sustainability is not just about environmentalism. It addresses what is known as a “triple bottom line,” meaning that projects and practices must make sense economically, socially and environmentally. Sustainable Jersey(TM) is a certification program for New Jersey municipalities that want to go green, save money and energy, and take steps to sustain their residents’ quality of life.
To achieve certification, communities must earn 100 points based on a variety of sustainable accomplishments, like having a Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, environmentally friendly purchasing or landscaping and a number of other practices, including creating a Green Team (see related article.) Council President Merry Brennan, who is compiling documentation for the certification, estimates that Belmar already is eligible for at least 120 points.

But once certified, the Borough will continue to pursue sustainable actions and will take advantage of the guidance and resources provided by the Sustainable Jersey program. The Borough will also look to take advantage of dunding opportunities and grants available through Sustainable Jersey.   To see the Sustainable Jersey check-list or learn more about the program, visit www.SustainableJersey.com.
